Why I Ride: Ezra Heethuis

In Why I Ride by Jathan Koetje

The weirdest thing to get used to was cutting away from the rope to hit something rather than towards. Another big thing for me though is I don’t have a boat. I have a cable pass so its super convenient. EZ

Ezra Heethuis

Ezra kills it on a snowboard so it was a natural transition to take those skills to the cable park. He has a unique riding style that is noticed by all and his personality is contagious to be around. We caught up with EZ to ask him about AWP. He’s got some interesting stories!

Where are you from?

Byron Center, MI

How & when did you start wakeboarding?

I started around six. I grew up with friends that had boats and parents that skied. My friend’s dad even had a Skurfer! One of the families got an O’brien Buzz and all of us had to try it. They later gave me the board and it was the board I learned my first back roll on!

How did you start cable wakeboarding?

Colton Dekline, Tyler Roede, Devon Main and I all took a trip down to Wake Nation to try it out 3 years ago. It was an adventure. We almost got murdered in some spooky cult town, the three of them clogged WN’s toilet after some gnarly Cincinnati chilidogs, and the poor staff had to deal with the aftermath. We slept in a tent in the middle of a soccer field, found a waterfall and Colt was asleep for at least an hour. Laughs, crap, TK gaging, cult town, tent in a soccer field and fun wakeboarding.

What makes cable wakeboarding different than riding behind the boat? Which do you prefer?

The weirdest thing to get used to was cutting away from the rope to hit something rather than towards. Another big thing for me though is I don’t have a boat. I have a cable pass so its super convenient.

What was your experience like at Action Wake Park this summer?

I had a lot of fun this summer. There was a bit of a learning curve I had to get over but it was fun to hang out with friends after work.

What was your favorite aspect about AWP?

My favorite part about AWP is that it provides a venue for fun to happen

What was your favorite feature at AWP?

My least favorite feature is the local snapper turtle I like the Ronix Box the best

What was your best memory at AWP?

Tyler Roede falling on the Liquidforce box while wakeskating and biting off part of his tongue and splitting open is chin in the process.

The real question is, are you riding with us next year?

Absolutely! Especially if that snapper is gone!
